Exams finished last week which means I've been able to draw some new stuff without that background feeling of guilt and impending doom that often accompanies my procrastination activities. S'bin nice.

Received a beautiful Christmas Edition Inside Out in the mail the other day - and guess what? Made of Awesome got a mention! Totally ZOMG. Big, giant thanks to Ebony from Unwrapped who mentioned our blog :)

I'm liking the cover of this issue - it definitely looks like an Australian Christmas with the warm golden tones - i'm loving the wood bunting - and the gold foil on the masthead which adds a bit shine to signify the festive season. I know from experience how hard it is to design for Christmas in Australia, it's just so much easier to fall back into the cliched white, snowy Christmas (which is still beautiful but just not representative of us).

Kudos to the IO team for delivering another brilliantly styled, creatively thought out and inspiring issue!

(p.s. if you haven't noticed yet, i am totally in love with inside out.)

Digital Product Placement

Well product placement has been around for many years, but recently a company called MirriAd has come up with a new way of placing products into films and shows.

Rather than planning ahead how to fit a product into a scene, their technology allows them to place products into scenes that have already been shot and have already aired. The best way to explain this is to watch their promo video...

It's amazing technology and will certainly change the way advertising works. But I hope they don't go too far, placing completely unrealistic products into classic old films.

I think in terms of forward planning, it will be interesting to see how directors substitute their pre-planned product placement, with negative space for post-production digital placement.

I also wonder how consumers will react to this as it grows. The whole point of product placement is to relate products to celebrities, and create recall and recognition in the minds of consumers. But if we all know it's done in post production, then the link between the product and celebrity is even further away.

Jackie's Film Review: Bill Cunningham New York

This documentary is a unique exploration of a street-fashion photographer’s mind. The film is worthwhile for those interested in fashion, photography and design, but does leave some unanswered questions regarding Cunningham’s sexuality and how he affords to live his lifestyle without being paid for his photography.

The cameras follow Cunningham around while he works, showing him riding his bicycle while he photographs the everyday women and men of New York and Paris, in what he believes to be above trends. The audience meets his old friends as they talk about his work and name-drop some classic popular culture icons they’d met such as Marlon Brando and Andy Warhol.

While this documentary is a little slow-paced and very private in relation to Cunningham’s personal life, I found this film inspirational and left the cinema more conscious of the fashion around me. Cunningham has always been more interested in how consumers put their fashion items together, rather than how it is arranged on the catwalk. However, his eye for spotting fashion is often drawn to the more peculiar and daring.

Here's something I was experimenting with on the weekend. Apart from being the usual pencil/ink scan + photoshop, the background was created using some out-of-focus city lights photos I took a few months ago. For a while now I've been wanting to emulate the feel of photos taken with a really shallow depth of field in an artwork, but I think my technique still needs some refinement...hopefully once exams are done I'll have more guilt-free chances to try some different compositions and see what works better! XP

We Make Carpets are kind of insane, but then again all things that make us gasp are made by insane people right?

Anyway, I am totally blown away by these 'temporary contemporary carpets', made of everyday objects such as the humble paperclip and disposable plastic fork. Anything with that amount of detail deserves a round of applause.

These videos make me rather sad. They were all a part of my life growing up so it's crazy to think the younger generations will be so unfamiliar with them. I guess it's like the circle of technology life.

I think the most surreal of all of these are the calculators and computer mouse - they still seem so recent.

Because I draw faces a lot, I tend to study them a lot - whether I'm browsing through fashion images, observing my friends, or just people watching from my study corner at a cafe (hopefully not staring too hard or sitting too near...lest I come off as some sort of creepy stalker/perve). I think we come across 'generically' pretty people quite often - nothing wrong with that at all, but i love finding a face that has an element which is slightly nuanced from the norm (like the eyebrows on the girl above - those are her natural brows and she is totally owning them) - it makes their beauty so much more interesting and unique.

And at the other extreme - hot pink eyebrows on a dude. I don't think I could've imagined how that would ever work, but the guy in this photo is totally pulling them off!

Everyone is putting out all their old stuff at the front of their houses at the moment for collection, and I've noticed one thing in particular seems to be at the front of almost everyone's houses. Can you guess what that is?... that's right old box TVs!

It's a real reflection of where we are at in our lives and the change in technology. But as this video demonstrates, just because we're moving forward with technology it doesn't mean we need to waste resources and kill the environment.

Remember to always reduce, reuse and recycle :)

5 tips to make your dreams come true

Great tips by Mitsy Belardo on how to make anything happen in life...

1. Don’t just list them, do them - Sitting down and making a list of the things we want to achieve in life is great. It allows us to contemplate on what we want for our immediate and distant future. However, sometimes the list just remains a list forever. Check your list daily or monthly and make sure at some point in time you get that goal accomplished and crossed off. Then move to the next one in line.

2. Don’t let people tell you it can’t be done – In this crazy world we live in, we will always encounter people whose goal in life is to bring other people down. These are usually just people who are insecure about themselves, and they criticize or try to influence us in order to make themselves seem better than us. A wonderful person told me just last week that we will encounter this type of individual, and we should never let anyone tell us that we can’t do something!

3. Don’t be afraid of hard work - Hard work and perseverance go hand in hand with success. Most dreams and goals will require us to work harder than we may have ever worked before. We may need to make some sacrifices, and we may even lose some sleep. However, once you reach that goal, I can guarantee you the good feeling will definitely outweigh the hardships you went through to get there.

4. Think of it as an adventure not a task – This tip is my favorite. I always make sure that I am having fun while accomplishing my goals. Once you look at something as a task to be accomplished, rather than a journey to be experienced, it makes it more unreachable and daunting.

5. Be with people who you know will support you – It is always good to have people you trust around you. These are people who you know have your back and push you to do your best. These are people you know you can ask for guidance and help when things are hard, and you feel uninspired.

I think this is a great summary!

I definitely make a lot of lists and get really excited when I can cross things off. It creates positive energy around your achievements (big and small).

Well I'm in Melbourne at the moment and this morning I attended the Camberwell Markets.
"A popular trash and treasure market held every Sunday by the Rotary Club of Balwyn".

I was surprised to find a few little locally handmade bits and pieces - using lovely vintage fabrics and images.

I splurged a little on some earrings from little shop, decked out in gold and another unbranded seller.

A little eye-mask from precious earth and a handmade purse using retro and recycled fabrics by Sarah St.

Telstra - Life in Full Colour

It's been a little while since I've posted my thoughts on branding strategy
- so here is my little bit:

I used to think Telstra was ripping people off. People around me were on phone plans that meant they could use their mobile all the time... yet although I believed Telstra's prices were unreasonable, I was still a brand loyal Telstra mobile phone user. I have noticed lately that their offered products are more competitive. Their business has changed and so their branding was due for an overhaul. I think their rebrand is a definite improvement. It is fresh, dynamic and more connected with today's society.

A brand as big as Telstra needs to communicate to many different market segments.
Colour is a good tool that can visually represent these markets. It is also used as a way to differentiate their own products within their brand. As long as it is kept clear what the colour represents then it will always work positively for them.

I just hope they're able to keep it fresh and innovative and not get too caught up with strict style guidelines. I believe that as long as a brand is recognisable and consistent in tone of voice then there is more freedom. And the future of the brand will evolve and grow with us.

AWESOME Arts are looking for volunteers to assist with their Who Are YOU? workshops during the October school holidays (3rd – 15th October) in Forrest Place, Perth CBD. Working alongside three local contemporary artists, volunteers will be required to assist artists and help facilitate the workshops. It will involve very hands on work so be prepared to get messy! No previous arts skills are required; you just need to have a go! This is a great chance to get up close with the artists, be involved in the creative process and have a whole lot of fun!! It is preferable (but not essential) that you are available at least 3 days of the project, but they are happy to work around you.

Volunteer shifts available Mon 3rd – Sat 15th Oct:
Monday to Friday 9am-2:30pm
Saturday 10am-3:30pm

The architecture of the building itself is modern and inspiring. But inside you will find an array of forward thinking car designs, a live motorbike show and a gallery of classic BMW cars. But most significantly, you will find a gallery of painted BMW vehicles by amazing artists from around the world. Below is quick snaps I took of the cars painted by two of my favorite artists of all time... that's right Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein!

I love cafe's especially french ones. The inspiration for this industrial chik cafe in Paris is based on a science laboratory. I most enjoy designers that use raw/recycled materials combined with modern elements.

Inspiring architecture from around the world

I have travelled all around the world and I have been blessed enough to see some of the most amazing architecture ever made! So although these photos are not amazing (they're just holiday snaps), I really just wanted to share some of the most inspirational designs in the world that I saw in my latest trip in June.

These include: Red Square and Church of the Spilt Blood in Russia, Neuchwanstein Castle and Linderhoff Castle in Germany and of course the Sagrada Familia by Gaudi in Barcelona.

The Red Tree

The latest production from Barking Gecko Theatre has just opened in Perth, The Red Tree, an adaptation of the brilliant book by Academy Award winner Shaun Tan.

The story touches on issues such as depression, but ends on such a positive and inspiring note that you can't help but feel happy. Watch this behind the scenes video for more info:

I saw this amazing red tree on Grosvenor Road near Fitzgerald Street a few weeks ago, a brilliant red that seemed so out of place for a suburban street. I went back there a week later and the red had turned brown, and most of the leaves had fallen off.

Hello! Its been yyoonkkss, but I finally got around to doing a new illustration the other day. It sounds stupid, but whenever its been a long time since my last drawing, I always feel weird about starting a new one because I think I'm going to be all rusty and then it won't turn out, and then I'll be all demotivated to draw anything else for another few months...yeah. I think I just think too much sometimes.

Anyway, I always like looking at how other people do their work, so I thought I'd share my own illustration work-in-progress [click to enlarge]:

1. pencil drawing is scanned into photoshop and cleaned

2. adding basic base colour

3. start adding colour to cheeks and lips, then continue building the colour in the face to create more depth

4. adding colour+details to clothing

5. final colour/saturation/lighting/gradient adjustments
